THE UNSUNG HERO BRAAM MALHERBE - Adventurer
In 2006, he ran the length of the Great Wall of China. Non-stop. For charity. But that's not the only reason we like him. When he's not embarking on a socially-minded extreme adventure, he's running youth development programmes, where he takes youngsters into the bush and using nature as a tool guides them to reach their full potential.
MAZ ZIMMERMAN - Founder: The Broccoli Project
Would you take a medical screening for HIV? Possibly. Would you do it for a reward? Probably. That's the thinking behind The Broccoli Project, an incentive programme that, instead of rewarding you for making purchases, rewards you for taking life-affirming actions. It's an uplifting, economy-defying voucher programme, and it's giving the poor incentives for improving their lives.
IMTIAZ SOOLIMAN - Founder: Gift of the Givers
South Africa's greatest export has to be the Gift of the Givers disaster
response foundation. They run in when everybody else runs out, lending much-needed aid to the world's crisis hot spots. The organisation also runs 24 projects covering areas like health, education, agricultural sustainability, job creation and feeding schemes making it (and making Sooliman, as its public face) a worthy candidate for this Best Men award.
